‘Developing Physical Health and Wellbeing through Gymnastic Activity’ is the title of the new book written by Maggie Carroll and Jackie Hannay. We celebrated the launch of their book in style – by holding a seminar and raising a glass to congratulate them on their achievement.
Capturing and sharing knowledge
Maggie and Jackie discussed the process of writing the book together from the initial idea to the final publication. They have worked together as teacher educators in the field of Physical Education for some years (indeed Maggie taught Jackie – clearly as a girl lecturer). Their passion for the depth and challenge of the subject was clear, and it was fascinating to hear how they embodied this in their work with students.
Their desire to capture and share their knowledge and expertise built upon Maggie’s experience of publishing a book a few years ago. They decided to draw upon the schemes of work that they used with student teachers, developing them to make explicit the theoretical foundations of the thinking and practice.
Collaborative approach in writing for publication
The inspiration of the evening lay in their account of their collaborative approach in realising their ideas as a publication. Their commitment to the project and to each other enabled them to be very clear about their timetable, shared responsibilities and relationship with the Routledge editors.
They discussed the practicalities of organising the work, from contractual arrangements and seeking permissions for photographs to working with templates and large documents. The manuscript was delivered fully illustrated, formatted and before the deadline!
Other colleagues also shared their own experiences of writing and publication, and Maggie and Jackie encouraged us all to look at our ongoing practice and be bold enough to ‘leave a trace’ to share our ideas and expertise with a wider audience.
