On Friday 18 February, 47 School of Education staff raised over £355 towards a memorial for their former colleague, Janet Clemence. Janet was a much loved and inspirational lecturer and teacher who made an extraordinary contribution to mathematics education across the region.
The fundraising event took place in the gym at the recently-opened Sports Centre at Falmer, where staff clocked up over 220 miles running, jogging, cycling, rowing, walking and cross training.

So far the School has raised £355 but we hope to increase this over the next few days with further donations and additional gift aid funding. Any remaining funds after the memorial will be donated to our charity project A School for Malagiri.
A lasting memorial
We intend to purchase some art work or a sculpture from the University of Brighton degree show at Grand Parade to commemorate Janet’s life and are also exploring the possibility of offering an annual award to students in her memory.
Travelling the distance
This event marks the start of a series of fundraising events to raise money for A School for Malagiri. With the combined efforts of staff, students and friends of the School of Education, we aim to travel the distance from Brighton to Malagiri by running, cycling, rowing and any other sport-related activity in which we participate. This equates to over 170 marathons and the map below shows how far we have to go.

We would like to thank everybody who participated and showed their support at the event on Friday.
