Our annual ‘Read to Inspire’ event was held on Wednesday 11 January in the Asa Briggs hall. As in previous years, it was a big hit with the audience and brought together authors of children’s books and over 200 of our students, to inspire a love of reading. We invited creators of The Edge Chronicles, Paul Stewart and Chris Riddell to discuss their working practices and share their skills. They were also joined by Alexis Deacon, creator of incredible picture books. His publication Beegu, was nominated for the prestigious Kate Greenaway Award and he has recently been rated in the top ten new illustrators by the Book Trust.

Both Alexis and Chris graduated from Brighton’s illustration course and generously gave up their time to present a window on their work. Alexis gave us a very personal insight into his drawings as a child and teenager and we were privileged to be given a special preview of his new book, Croc and Bird, due out in April. There was a whole hour of book signing as our students queued up to receive a personal message and, in some cases, some original artwork from the authors and illustrators.
