-
Are you a programmer, or a systems architect?
-
Have you got a degree in a computing-related field?
-
Do you have the skills and knowledge to be able to deliver the exciting and new curriculum to students currently starting their GCSE studies in Computer Science?
If so, then our PGCE course in Computer Science would be an ideal way to train as a teacher and qualify to work in schools in England and Wales. Eric Schmidt of Google commented in 2011 that “he had been flabbergasted to learn that computer science was not taught as standard in UK schools”. In 2012, Michael Gove, Secretary of State for Education announced the change from teaching ICT to Computer Science in schools at all ages. The new National Curriculum is currently being discussed with the final version being ready for teaching starting this coming September. There is a need for teachers of Computer Science, and the University of Brighton is looking at how we can fill this.
Working collaboratively, the schools of Education and Computing, Engineering and Mathematics have prepared two courses that will train the next generation of teachers for schools in the West Sussex, Brighton and Hove and East Sussex region.
The PGCE Computer Science course will train graduates with good first degrees in computing-related subjects in how to teach Computer Science. If though, you would like to be a teacher of Computer Science, but your degree is not in computing, then our second course might help. The Subject Knowledge Enhancement (SKE) course is designed to train you in those aspects where your current knowledge needs some improvement. The units of the SKE course can be taken over a short period of time, and may be funded by the government. Successful completion of the SKE can lead to a place on the PGCE.
