GTP Admissions

Entry requirements

To embark upon this course you must meet the following criteria:

  • a recognised degree or equivalent
  • grade A* - C in English language, mathematics, or equivalent
  • primary trainees have grade A* - C in science or equivalent
  • be employed as an unqualified teacher or instructor in a maintained school.

GCSEs and equivalence tests

If you do not hold the required GCSE grades, the University of Brighton is able to offer you a GCSE equivalence test. Please note you must have passed the equivalence test before applying for the GTP.

Work experience

The GTP is a very competitive route and you will be required to have the minimum experience specified below in the class room to be considered for an interview.

  • Primary GTP - 6 weeks experience in a primary school
  • Secondary GTP - 2 weeks experience in a secondary school

The experience in the classroom does not have to be whole class teaching but can include observing teachers and helping with group work. Please note having this amount of experience does not guarantee being selected for interview.

International applicants

We welcome international applications. If you have any international qualifications you will need to have their equivalence confirmed by National Academic Recognition Information Centre (NARIC). You must do this before you apply in order to meet the course entry requirements. Please note, this may take several weeks and there is a fee for the service. It is advisable to make enquiries about all education qualifications at the same time so you don’t have to pay the fee more than once.
