The School of Education is not funded to pay students' travel expenses but will, while funding allows, make a contribution to additional travel costs incurred while on school placement as follows:
Claim forms are available outside the ITE Partnership Office, Checkland Building, Falmer.
Please note: incorrect claims will be considered as fraud and may result in disciplinary action or prosecution.
There are two forms:
School Experience Advance
To help with the purchase of season tickets or high car/motorcycle mileage (minimum £50):
- this must be submitted no later than three weeks after the start of your school placement. Otherwise, you can only make a retrospective claim (see below)
- 75% of your claim will be paid on submission of this advance; the remaining 25% is paid on submission of a School Experience Claim (see below) at the end of your placement, with verification of attendance and tickets where public transport is used
- if you do not submit a School Experience Claim at the end of your placement you will be required to repay the advance.
School Experience Claim
One claim at the end of the placement. All claims must be submitted by 31st July.
- allow enough time for your school to confirm the number of days you attended the placement
- if you travelled by public transport, you must submit all tickets (or receipts) with your claim, otherwise, some journeys will be deducted. Please group journeys on the form itself and associated tickets into daily/weekly/monthly for speedier processing!
- you must obtain the cheapest ticket (normally a monthly season) for your journey. Monthly/weekly tickets are often cheaper even if you are only in school for three days a week. Please check before you travel. There is a special UNIZONE ticket for student train travel in this area
- those driving to their placement can claim 16p per mile. Those who are able to offer a lift to another student can claim 20p per mile for the first passenger. 22p per mile can be claimed for 2 or more passengers. Ensure that you note the name and address of your passenger on the form. Only the driver may claim for travel expenses
- we do not cover vehicle fuel and maintenance costs and cannot accept petrol receipts, odometer readings or repair bills
- We cannot cover taxi expenses.
All forms should be submitted to the ITE Partnership Office, Checkland Building, at the Falmer campus.
For example:
- if it costs you £5.00 per day to get to school and your normal daily travel to the university costs £3.00, we will reimburse you £2.00
- if it costs you £5.00 per day to get to school and your normal daily travel to the university costs £1.50, we will reimburse you £2.50 (i.e. £5.00 less the minimum deduction of £2.50)
- if it costs you £7.50 per day to get to school and you normally cycle/walk/get a lift to the university or live on campus, we will reimburse you £5.00 (i.e. £7.50 less the minimum deduction of £2.50)
- if it costs you £2.50 or less to get to school, you cannot make a claim.
FAQs
It doesn't cost me anything to get to the university so why must I deduct this from my claim?
The university is subject to strict regulations regarding the use of public funding. Both the university and the student make a contribution to expenses incurred. Students must pay the first £2.50 (or more depending on the distance between your term-time address and the university.)
Can I claim more if I take more than one passenger?
Yes. For the first passenger The university will pay 20p per mile. For 2 or more passengers the university will pay 22p per mile.

How and when will I receive my money?
Your money will be transferred directly to your account by our finance department. You will receive written confirmation of this by post. You should allow 4-6 weeks for this, especially in the busy period following the end of placements.
To whom should I direct any queries regarding my travel claim?
You should submit any queries in writing directly to the Partnership Office or to . We process hundreds of claims and need time to consult our files and assess each individual's situation. If you do call, we will note your name and number and respond in writing to explain calculations fully.
I am a Secondary student. Can I claim for my week's primary experience?
We are unfortunately unable to cover these costs.

Students using their own vehicles to transport themselves and fellow students on university business, must ensure that the vehicles is appropriately insured, taxed and has a valid MOT certificate.
The Partnership Office reserves the right to withhold payment to any student who claims travel by car if they did not disclose they had a car on their School Experience Placement Request forms.
