John Barnes, Primary Education with QTS (3-7 years) BA(Hons)
As a 'Brighton boy', studying at the local university was an obvious choice, but I applied to Brighton because I knew it had an excellent reputation and I really wanted to teach in the early years.
Broadened my horizons
It was great to meet a new bunch of people who have broadened my horizons and I am sure that we'll keep in touch for years after we've graduated. I think it's important to have male teachers in infant schools so that young children of both sexes have positive role models although, above all, they need good teachers. I've had teaching placements in four different schools and they have all been really welcoming.
Thinking outside the box
Apart from the placements, the best part of the course for me has been the emphasis on cross curricular learning and 'thinking outside the box'. After 4 years, I am just about to qualify as a teacher and I have already been offered a job teaching a mixed Reception/Year 1 class and I'm really excited by the prospect of starting my career in teaching.
