Lizzie Martin, Professional Studies in Primary Education (Fda), followed by Professional Studies in Learning and Development BA(Hons). Graduated in 2009
When I embarked on my part-time studies with the university, I didn’t realise just how life-changing the experience would be. I was working as a teaching assistant and had thought I would have to leave my job in order to achieve my ambition to be a teacher.
Through the Professional Studies in Primary Education (Fda), followed by progressing to the Professional Studies in Learning and Development BA(Hons), I was able to achieve my degree whilst continuing with the job that I loved. The greatest advantage of doing this was that everything I was learning at university could be applied into my practice, enabling me to critically evaluate and analyse how theory underpinned what I did in the everyday world of a primary school. Another benefit of this route was that I was able to manage the needs of my family; part-time study allowed me to be there for my children before and after school, with all taught sessions fitting well within school hours.
My knowledge and understanding of teaching practice has been broadened considerably thorough my studies; subject knowledge, pedagogy and curriculum matters were all covered comprehensively and in-depth, leading to me feeling far more equipped and able to teach well. A particular highlight of the course was the undertaking of a research project, which gave me the freedom to study a subject of my own choice. This again has opened up my perspective on many educational matters, leading to a better understanding of teaching principles and also furthering my enthusiasm for academic study.
As a path leading to a teaching career, I cannot recommend this course highly enough. I’ve recently started on the Graduate Teacher Programme and, because of my time at university, I feel thoroughly prepared for the final step to becoming a teacher. The foundations laid by the courses I have undertaken are firm and trustworthy and will serve me well as I move forward into a richly rewarding teaching career.
