Routes into teaching
The School of Education offers a range of undergraduate and postgraduate courses to enable you to train to become a teacher and gain Qualified Teacher Status (QTS).
Undergraduate
| BA(Hons) with QTS Primary | For those without a degree who want to train to teach at primary level. |
| BA(Hons) with QTS (7-11 years) | For those wishing to train as a subject specialist teacher of children aged 7-14. |
| BA(Hons) with QTS Secondary | For students who have completed at least one year of higher education and would now like to train to become a teacher. |
Postgraduate
| PGCE Primary | For those with a degree who want to train to teach at primary level. |
| PGCE Secondary | For those wishing to teach in secondary education who hold a degree in a subject related to their chosen specialism. |
| Pre-Initial Teacher Training (ITT) Communication Skills Course | For academically high achieving graduates who would benefit from enhancing and refining their communication skills before training to teach maths, physics, chemistry or computer science in 2013/14. |
| Subject Knowledge Enhancement | To boost subject knowledge for those whose degree is not appropriate for their intended PGCE (secondary) course. |
| PGCE Post-compulsory | For those with a relevant degree wishing to teach post-compulsory (16+) students. |
School Experience Programme
The School Experience Programme (SEP) has been developed by the Teaching Agency and allows people interested in teaching to gain classroom experience in primary and secondary schools.

Professional skills test
To study on an initial teacher training course (i.e. a PGCE or a BA Hons with QTS), you need to meet entry requirements determined by the government, including GCSE minimum grade C or equivalent in mathematics, English language and a science. You must also be able to read effectively and communicate clearly in spoken and written standard English.
