Secret World - Biomaterials: From tissue replacement to tissue regeneration – inaugural lecture by Professor Matteo Santin

6.30pm Thursday 1 December 2011
Huxley Building, University of Brighton, Lewes Road, Brighton BN2 4GJ

Anatomical structures relentlessly work to support the functions of our bodies. The harmony of these functions is the result of precise interactions of macromolecules and cells in a hidden nanoscopic/microscopic world.

Ageing and degenerative pathologies disrupt the integrity of these structures thus impairing the quality of our lives and often leading to premature death.

Medical implants, manufactured from natural and synthetic biomaterials, are routinely used in the clinical practice to replace damaged tissues. However, their functioning is still limited by the host response to the foreign material that prevents their full integration into the tissue.

In his lecture, Professor Santin provides an overview of his contribution to the understanding of the bio-mechanisms underlying the host response to implants and to the strategies that have been adopted to facilitate their functional integration. Pioneering biomimetic materials aiming at the complete regeneration of tissues are also presented alongside the scientific, ethical and socio-economic assessment of their future impact on our lives.
