The Makeshift catalogue was published to coincide with the exhibition
of the same name at the University of Brighton Gallery in March
2001.
'The idea of the makeshift seems to be the antithesis of the idea
of art. Whereas something that is makeshift is usually thought of
in terms of expediency and transience, art is more often defined
by the notion of its singular purpose and a sense of enduring values,
timelessness. Moreover, the makeshift brings to mind a sense of
the prosaic nature of the world, a place where the necessities of
ordinary life are ever present; while the promise of art has often
been that we are able to transcend such things'. Excerpt from the
Introduction of 'Makeshift' by David Green February 2001.
This colour 54 page catalogue shows work from Martin Creed (2001
Turner Prize Winner), Angela de la Cruz, Peter Fischli and David
Weiss, Terry Smith, Amikam Toren, Keith Tyson (2002 Turner Prize
Winnner) and Richard Wentworth. Essays are by David Green, Joanna
Lowry and Nicholas de Ville.
