visions, the festival of visual performance presents
Puppetry into Dance Showcase

Friday 25 October – Saturday 26 October 2002
visions, the festival of visual performance, in collaboration with South East Dance has commissioned young graduates from the region to create three unusual short productions incorporating visual performance, dance and puppetry which will be premiered at visions.

Young animators/puppeteers and dancers took part in weekend masterclasses with renowned contemporary dance choreographer Yolande Snaith and Brighton based puppeteer Graeme Gilmour (designer of the West End cult hit Shockheaded Peter). This resulted in three commissions which festival-goers can see on Friday 25 and Saturday 26 October.

They are: The Freds, The Bread Knife, and The Prince, The Pavilion and His Pleasures, the latter performance taking place in the exotic Music Room of the Royal Pavilion, while the others can be see free of charge in Brighton’s North Laine and the Photographic Studio at the University of Brighton on Grand Parade.

The Freds are a collective of cartoonesque alien creatures with extraordinary body parts performing Act no790B from their extensive catalogue. In this humorous performance, strange crimson striped alien entities execute a choreographed dance, interacting with the public and merging with each other to create various grotesque hybrids.

The Freds are: Tom Cook, Eva Daurios and Helen Plewis and will be performing 790B in the North Laine Friday 25th and Saturday 26th 4pm – 8pm.
The Bread Knife is a ten minute piece of animated dance-theatre, tightly weaving visual curiosities and a multi-layered soundscape into an atmospheric, heroic and peculiar story. You are likely to see…a doll made of knotted cloth found in a sandwich…lots of smoke…a knight whose armour is made entirely of bread…puppets that carry on twitching when left unattended…a goat or two… a loaf that comes alive.

Performed by: Laura Trevail, Matthew Robins, Janine Fletcher, Polly Lawrence, Rachael Sweeny, and Sylvia Peruzzi in Studio 204, University of Brighton, Grand Parade Friday 25th 11am, 1.00pm, 3.00pm, 5.00pm, 7.00pm. Free Admission.

The Prince, The Pavilion and His Pleasures tells the story of the philandering Prince Regent and his opulent lifestyle showing the relationships with his partners and parents King George III and Queen Charlotte. Creatures of the Palace such as great dragons, phoenixes, and mythological beasts representing the characters are brought to life when courtiers fall asleep. Inspired by their research into the Prince Regent’s extraordinary history and society life at the Brighton Pavilion at the turn of the 19th Century, the performance includes the use of animated fans, masks, costumes, shadow puppetry and live action, including traditional court dances.Ady Griffiths, Director, says,
"Our influences stemmed from weekend workshops. It was a magical process of exploring everyday materials, such as fabrics and cardboard, and transforming them into fantastical beings. From there we integrated our new skills into a narrative about the Prince’s life"

Performed by: Rajyashree Ramamurthi, Richard Cowdry, Ady Griffiths, Simone Clarke, Alison Allum, Hannah Hill. Will be in The Music Room in The Royal Pavilion. Admission payable. Brighton & Hove residents £2.15 (please bring proof of residency – council tax/ other bill) Friday 25th 12.30pm, 3.30pm, Saturday 26th 1.00pm, 3.30pm

The puppetry into dance commissions have been supported by the University of Brighton, Southern & South East Arts Regional Arts Lottery Programme, the Esme Fairbairn Foundation and Brighton & Hove City Council.
