The Festival of Visual Performance
Thursday 24 October Saturday
2 November 2002
|
| |
visions, a ten day festival of
visually amazing performances, exhibitions and films opens in Brighton
this October. This years visions has a distinctively global
flavour, with around thirty five companies taking part from as far
afield as India, Australia, Spain, Israel, Germany and France as well
as Britain. Twelve UK premieres include work newly commissioned for
the festival.
Linda Lewis, Artistic and Executive Director of visions feels people
should expect to find something surprising at the festival: "visions
wants to show British audiences, artists and promoters how companies
from different cultures and traditions are putting a fresh spin on
theatre. Many companies spice performances with video, projections,
animated objects, soundtracks and actors to create a very contemporary
dramatic experience."
visions has commissioned British company Wireframe to make a piece
that will be shown in Fabrica, a contemporary art gallery in a disused
church. Elevation will run as both an installation and an animated
performance, with bird-like creatures flapping around the space and
promises of indoor kite-flying. visions second commission, in
collaboration with South East Dance, brings together choreographers
and puppeteers to make short performances under the mentorship of
choreographer Yolande Snaith and puppeteer Graeme Gilmour (whose work
has included Shockheaded Peter).
Other premieres include Children of the Beast, an Israeli-German co-production
between Teatron Theater and Figuren Theater Tübingen. This powerful
adult animated theatre production uses actors, masks and puppet figures
to relate experiences of the Holocaust by different generations. And
Igneous, from Australia, present Body in Question. Ex- DV8 dancer
James Cunningham explores perceptions of body image in a stunningly
beautiful performance which re-tells the story of his own disabling
motorbike accident using dance and a life-sized puppet.
During the packed festival opening weekend, puppets will be taking
to the pavements with many free "visions starters" performances
before ticketed shows. These include large-scale animal puppets from
Orisa in India. visions has plenty of entertainment for families over
half term, including a new show from Theatre-rites and Meiningen Theatres
interpretation of The Tin Soldier fairytale told in an incredible
inflatable domed tent using multi-media projections, shadow puppets
and live performance.
