visions 2004 – dates announced

The next visions festival of visual performance will take place in Brighton from
Thursday 21 – Saturday 30 October 2004.

Promoted by the University of Brighton, visions will present ten days of visually amazing performances on stages, in studios, streets and other unusual spaces around Brighton.

"At present we are looking at companies from Canada, Australia, Japan, France, Germany, Denmark and Belgium as well as Britain" said Linda Lewis, Director of visions. "We are especially interested in presenting shows which make innovative use of sound and music as an intergral element of the performance, although I am open to seeing a wide range of new work."

visions is also seeking work by British companies working creatively with contemporary visual performance for the Launch-Pad event. visions Launch-Pad provides a platform for companies to show new work in a festival fringe venue in central Brighton. Companies / artists interested in showing work at visions Launch-Pad should send visuals, details and any forthcoming performance dates to:

visions 2004 is promoted by the University of Brighton and funded by Arts Council England, South East.

A new life for visions

2002 marked a change for visions as we started to make the journey from a puppetry festival to a festival of visual performance. We commissioned four new pieces of work, which reflected our transition, combining as they did, elements of puppetry, dance, and installation. visions, which is promoted by the University of Brighton, also visited new places such as the Royal Pavilion, Fabrica (a gallery in a disused church) and the city streets as well as the Gardner Arts Centre, Komedia and The Corn Exchange, Brighton Dome.

Evaluation of visions 2002 shows that we welcomed to Brighton over 300 promoters and artists from the UK and abroad. Box office targets were exceeded and over nine thousand people attended visions events. We are pleased to hear that UK premieres we presented have since received further bookings.

"Since its inception in 1994, visions has championed contemporary puppetry and animated theatre which was then seen by some as a "poor relation". Now mainstream festivals and theatres feature exciting puppetry in their programmes, we feel it is time for visions to move on" explains Linda Lewis, Artistic and Executive Director "With our key supporters, the University of Brighton and Arts Council England, South East and other partners, visions is able to re-focus the festival as a flagship for a fresh approach to visual performance. Our mission for the next few years is to be recognised by arts practitioners as the UK organisation with the expertise, imagination and capacity to unveil astonishing and inspirational new ideas and high standards of presentation in the field of visual theatre."

visions is currently seeking creative artists and directors from around the world who can join us in discovering new dimensions in visual performance. We are also interested in hearing about new and exciting work happening in your area. If you would like to know more about becoming one of our ‘scouts’ please contact us on visions.fest@bton.ac.uk

visions is a biennial festival and the provisional dates for the next visions are 21 – 31 October 2004.
