Academy students in media takeover
Published June 2012
For three days in June, 27 children from the Hastings and St Leonards academies will be taking part in a media summer school at the University of Brighton’s Hastings campus.
Organised by the university’s Widening Participation department, the event will give local students a chance to have a closer look at university life by allowing them to take part in a programme of activities across all of the areas of media that are taught on the campus.
They will be guided by a team of student ambassadors and by lecturers who are experienced media professionals. They will have access to a fully-equipped Broadcast Media suite which includes high definition camera kits and DSLR cameras, a newsroom with live newsfeed, industry-standard radio station and television studio.
On the final day, friends and families of the students will be invited to a screening of their work.
Rachael Roser, Widening Participation co-ordinator for the University of Brighton in Hastings and organiser of the Media Summer School, said: “We’ve had so much interest from students it’s been fantastic. The students who attend will have a really interesting time and will learn about life at the university, the media industry and about the opportunities that are available to them. This will be a very valuable experience for the students who have been lucky enough to be offered a place.”
Jo MacDonnell, Course Leader for Broadcast Media and TV Production, said: “this is a really exciting opportunity for young people with little prior media experience to have a taste of what it is like to study on a vocational media course at University level, they will be following in the footsteps of a number of local students who have completed our courses and gone on to have fabulous careers in film, TV and radio. My team and I are really looking forward to working with the academy pupils.”
Media Summer School will be taking place on June 25th, 26th and 27th 2012.
