Dan Pothecary wins Hastings Youth Award

A University of Brighton student has won a top award for his work in the community.

Dan Pothecary, a second year education and English literature student at the university’s campus in Hastings, collected his Hastings Youth Award from town mayor Councillor Alan Roberts.

Dan was nominated by Lorraine Roberts, student support and guidance tutor at the University of Brighton in Hastings, who said: “As a widening participation student ambassador at the campus, Dan goes into schools and colleges and speaks to pupils who may never have considered university as an option, and he recently worked on a project to encourage primary school boys to read.

“Dan is now a committee member of the Friends of Warrior Square with responsibility for integration of university students in Hastings and the surrounding area. Dan liaises closely with the residents and council leader Councillor Jeremy Birch to enable issues regarding student transition to be addressed as soon as possible.
“Dan and the Friends planned a series of events for new students arriving this autumn to enable the community and students to meet from the start of the academic year. He works tirelessly on the New Student facebook and helped students from outside the area feel comfortable with the town prior to starting at the campus.
“Dan continues to do much great work for students and in promoting Hastings as a great place to study.”
Dan said: “I enjoy working with the community but this award was quite a surprise. I’m pleased and proud.”
