TV Taster day for Helenswood School
Published February 2013
Pupils at Helenswood School were given an insight into TV production and University life following a visit by the University of Brighton in Hastings.
TV Production course leader, Jo MacDonnell, and five of her students took along camera equipment for what was a truly hands-on experience. The school pupils were extremely enthusiastic about the day and asked many, many questions about university life.
"I loved it" said Brooke Skelton, aged 14, "I learnt a lot about Uni and I also learnt to work with cameras and what it’s like on set."
More than 60 year nine pupils applied for the 20 places on offer but as Jo promised: "We’ll do it again." The visit was funded by the university's Widening Participation Programme which conveys the message that higher education is available to everyone irrespective of their background. It works with secondary schools in the Hastings area to inform students about their options.
"We also offer mentoring to primary and secondary schools which provides excellent work experience for our students" said Rachael Roser, Widening Participation Coordinator.
Other taster activities taking place in the near future include Architecture, Fashion, Creative Writing, Engineering and a Biology Summer School. If you would like to know more about the Widening Participation Programme please contact Rachael Rosser r.l.roser@brighton.ac.uk
