Graduate celebration 2011

Published July 2011

Students, staff and guests took part in an uplifting celebration of graduates’ achievements at Azur, Marina Parade on Tuesday 19 July at Azur at Marina Pavilion, Hastings

In perfect weather, High Sheriff of East Sussex Kathy Gore built on the inspiration that has driven the students through their studies, encouraging everyone to make the most of the choices we have and to be positive about the choices we make.

Margaret Wallis, director of the Hastings campus, paid tribute to the work of students and staff. She highlighted the specific achievements of students gaining first class degrees and the whole class of Internet Computing graduates, who have already been recruited for work, as well as the excellent feedback about staff and the work of colleagues with groups of young people who are underrepresented at universities.

Becki Adams, BA(Hons) English and Education, gave a valedictory speech which was commended by Deputy Vice-Chancellor Stuart Laing.

“It was a wonderful event in a perfect location – even the weather was right for us – with a very positive, upbeat atmosphere. I was really impressed to see so much variety in people achieving success here, people of different ages, many from Hastings and the local area and many others coming from much further afield.

The thing that stands out for me is the inspiring work that the University is doing in Hastings. There is a very special essence of achievement that surrounds this campus, making it a beacon of excellence not just in Hastings but for the whole county.”

Kathy Gore, High Sheriff of East Sussex

“It was a great pleasure attending your graduate celebration and meeting some of you. The organisation was fantastic, the ambience was warm and welcoming, and your engagement and pride in the Hastings cohort was so tangible. Well done everyone. It makes me want to go back and study some more!"

Sarah Grant, Alumni Engagement Officer

“It was extremely uplifting to see so many students attending this special event. I am very proud of all our students and their achievements since arriving here as shy first-years, now leaving as assured graduates. We will miss them and wish them every success as they move on to further opportunities.”
