Primary Graduate Teaching Programme (GTP)
The Graduate Teacher Programme (GTP) is an employment-based route leading to Qualified Teacher Status.
The status of GTP trainees
The GTP trainees are employed as instructors (unqualified teachers) by the school. They are bound by the same terms and conditions of any regular member of staff and are expected to participate in the duties expected of all teaching staff. All GTP trainees must be supernumerary.
As the GTP is a training route, trainees are not expected to teach a full timetable; they are given flexibility and freedom to undertake development activities such as observations, to plan and assess and to collect evidence to meet the Standards.
A significant part of the training is in the school but trainees are released to attend specified modules at the university as required. As such they are full-time members of the university and so have university library and IT access. All GTP trainees engage in 60 days training which takes place both at the university and in schools.
Timing of the GTP
The GTP at the University of Brighton starts every September and normally takes one year. It is possible, if a trainee already has considerable teaching experience, to gain QTS in a shorter timescale.
Why choose the GTP route?
GTP trainees are employed by a school, as an instructor, while they train and attend sessions at the university. The school plays a key role in training the GTP trainee and provides them with a mentor.
On passing the final assessment trainees are recommended for QTS but do not receive an academic award from the university. GTP trainees also have a second placement opportunity in order to meet their training needs. This is six weeks in total.
This is an employment-based route. GTP trainees are paid a salary whilst they train to teach of approximately £15,000. There are no tuition fees.
Applying for more than one GTP or PGCE
Applicants can apply to more than one GTP or PGCE run by different providers.
