Part-time students

What does part-time study mean in practice?

Typically, it means you'll study half the number of modules per year for your course. For instance, you would study three out of six first-year modules in the first year, and the other three first-year modules in your second year of study. Studying a full degree course this way means it takes twice as long to complete your degree as for someone studying full-time.

By studying fewer hours per week, you may be able to fit your study around other existing commitments such as your job or family more easily. As lectures take place during the day, you may still need to discuss your working arrangements with your employer. If your course is related to your job, you may be able to ask for study leave, or you may be able to apply to work flexible hours.

Fees and funding for people studying part-time

Part-time students will no longer have to pay tuition fees up front. All eligible part-time students who study for at least 25 per cent of the time of a full-time course are now also eligible fro a student loan to cover the cost of their tuition whilst they are studying. Part-time students are no eligible for government grants or loans to help cover their living costs.
