The faculty is the largest in the university and has a growing national and international reputation for innovation and excellence in health and social science education. We employ a range of health and social care models drawn from the natural and social sciences and the humanities focusing on interdisciplinary approaches to health, well-being and welfare. We place contemporary professional practice and knowledge in global context working with a range of partners at local national and international level.
We aim to produce expert and responsive practitioners and critically engaged social scientists who will contribute to the future development of their subjects, professions and communities of practice. As well as qualifying education we provide a wide range of continuing professional development opportunities with flexible study patterns for health and social care professionals.
The faculty is led by the dean, David Taylor, and offers courses and research opportunities in social policy, criminology, applied psychology, sociology, politics, health and social care, substance misuse, public policy, social work, counselling and psychotherapy, nursing, midwifery, health promotion, physiotherapy, podiatry, occupational therapy and complementary medicine. As well as undertaking a wide range of teaching, research and community engagement activity we host a number of regional and national research support networks. The faculty works closely with the Brighton and Sussex Medical School and we enjoy strong links with the National Health Service, trusts, social services, the independent and voluntary sectors and agencies involved in health and welfare professions. We have senior membership of many professional bodies associated with our work. We have received excellent external evaluation of our teaching from the Quality Assurance Agency and from professional, statutory and regulatory bodies.
