Courses

The faculty offers a wide range of courses across the health and social care professions and the applied social sciences. We aim to produce excellent and expert practitioners who are flexible and engaged with their professions, disciplines and the wider community. We have received extremely positive evaluations from students, commissioners, professional and statutory and regulatory bodies and from the Quality Assurance Agency.

Most students have the opportunity to undertake professionally relevant work experience through a professional placement or to spend time working in the local community through a placement in the voluntary and independent sectors.

Through inter-professional learning many students engage with other professions and subjects. We frequently bring health and social care students and professionals together with each other and, on some courses, with other professions outside the faculty including student teachers from the School of Education, doctors from the Brighton and Sussex Medical School and pharmacists from the School of Pharmacy and Biomedical Sciences.

We offer courses at all levels from foundation degree through undergraduate and taught postgraduate to traditional and professional doctorates. Most courses are offered in one of the three schools of the faculty but as part of our commitment to inter-disciplinarity and inter-professionalism, two cross-school programmes are managed at faculty level:

  • The Graduate Programme in Health and Social Sciences is one of the largest flexible postgraduate study programmes in the university and allows students a wide range of study options and flexible learning patterns in health and social science;

  • The Professional Doctorate in Health and Social Care is a four-year, part-time programme designed to provide experienced health and social care professionals the opportunity to develop advanced research skills and knowledge in the theory and practice of their discipline, and to pursue original lines of research in areas of direct relevance to their work. Based around inter-professional action learning sets, we offer professional doctorates in: occupational therapy, physiotherapy, podiatry, social work, counselling and psychotherapy, midwifery, nursing, pharmacy, biomedical science, and, health care.

  • In partnership with the Brighton and Sussex Medical School Division of Medical Education, the faculty has developed a series of study days and workshops for busy professionals and support staff working in the health care services.
