Graduate Programme in Health and Social Sciences

Extended masters route for international students

The extended masters route is now available for the following masters courses (subject to validation):

It allows you to combine a masters degree with an English language course. You can typically obtain a single UK visa to cover both parts. Depending on your current language level you will study English for between two and four months before starting your masters course.

The objective of the English language study in the extended masters route is to help you build up a strong academic vocabulary that specifically relates to your masters subject. You will have an opportunity to work with specialist tutors in Health and Social Science before starting your 12-month masters degree.

Course structure

You will have 20 hours of lessons per week with some afternoons free for directed self-study. Lessons normally take place between 9.30am and 1pm in the morning and between 14.00 and 16.00 in the afternoon. English classes are taught in small groups of up to 16 students. To help with private study you will have full access to the university's library and computer facilities. There are no lessons on UK national holidays.

Assessment

To progress to your masters degree you will need to pass the following assessments:

  • Academic reading.
  • Essay and report writing.
  • Note-taking from lectures.
  • Presentations.
  • A portfolio to demonstrate your developing language learning and study skills.

Accommodation

If you are applying for the first two parts of the extended masters route (Develop your English and Extend your English), we can arrange host-family accommodation for you.

For the final part (Consolidate Your English) and for your masters degree, university accommodation will be available. This will be based near to the campus where you will be studying. You will have a single study bedroom with shower facilities in a shared apartment. Kitchen and laundry facilities are provided and meals are available on the university campus. If you prefer, the university’s accommodation office can advise you about alternative renting options, for example from a private landlord.

How to apply

You can find out more about the extended masters route, including entry requirements and fees, on the university's Learn English webpages.

To apply for the extended masters, you should apply for your masters course in the usual way. You then also need to apply separately for the English language component of the course. You can download an application form or apply online via our Learn English webpages.
