Clinical Academic Training Programme for Internships
The NIHR and the Chief Nursing Officer for England in collaboration with the Higher Education Funding Council for England has established an integrated clinical academic training programme (CATP) for nurses, midwives and allied health professionals. NIHR research training awards aim to increase research capacity in the NHS and improve health and healthcare by developing people with the potential and aspiration to become leading clinical academics and independent researchers of the future. The NHS South of England (East) internship programme has been developed collaboratively between the Universities of Brighton, Greenwich, Canterbury Christchurch and Surrey, together with professional leads. It aims to offer experience of working in a research environment to practitioners considering a clinical research career, and to enhance each intern's ability to apply successfully for the next stage of formal research training.
The programme consists of three core elements:- Access to an academic supervisor
- Participation in an action learning set
- Access to taught components which could include modules or sessions on research
These core elements are designed to help the intern develop their research proposal and to develop a wider support network. Each intern will have the opportunity to develop a bespoke programme with their academic supervisor. In addition, interns will be able to participate in other activities which may include working with current researchers; observing data collection; visiting clinical research facilities, and attending research presentations and seminars. It is anticipated that interns will undertake the programme on a day release basis for 1-2 days a week, depending on their learning needs.
MRes (Clinical Research)
Funding has been awarded from the NIHR for research training for allied health professions, nurses and midwives. This forms part of the initiative to develop clinical/academic careers for health professions staff. This course is a collaboration between the School of Health Professions and the School of Nursing and Midwifery. The funding will pay all course fees and employment costs of staff during their participation on the course (one year full-time, two years part-time). Two cohorts will commence in September 2013 and September 2014.
