 Eating, Shopping and Banking

A range of food (from full meals and snacks) is available from outlets across all five campuses.  Details of opening times and locations of these outlets, plus information on shopping and banking available can be found under the eating, shopping and banking section of the website.

We benefit from a campus branch of Santander located on the mezzanine floor in the Cockcroft building, Moulsecoomb Campus.  If you'd like to know more about any offers, please email the branch manager, Holly Price (santandercockcroft@brighton.ac.uk) or feel free to pop into the branch.  The branch is open from 10am to 6pm, Monday to Friday (5pm on Wednesdays).

 

 Childcare

The university has two nurseries, both of which have been recognised as 'outstanding' by Ofsted.  One World and Phoenix nurseries  are available to children of staff and students, aged 2-5 and are open for 45 weeks per year, Monday to Friday.  Part-time and full-time places are available, and children can start at the nurseries throughout the year, subject to availability.  Staff can save money on their childcare costs via the Childcare voucher scheme.

 Clubs and societies

A number of clubs and societies, including a choir, attract both students and staff.

 Cultural events

The Faculty of Arts and Architecture provides a regular programme of lunch time and evening concerts, open lectures and exhibitions in the Sallis Benney theatre and university gallery. Development and training

The university offers a wide range of personal and professional development activities . Options range through workshops, conferences, part-time certificate and diploma courses, professional qualifications and higher degrees. Part-time courses are free of charge for staff at the University of Brighton, University of Sussex and City College. Excellent learning resources are available on each site and staff are encouraged to undertake a mixture of formal training and self-development on a continuous basis.  Health and welfare

The Occupational Health Service provides support and advice to staff who are ill as well as counseling and advice on health and welfare. The university holds events to promote health and well-being. A contribution towards eyeglasses/lenses if available to staff who are required to use display screen equipment heavily as part of their job.  Find out more: health and well-being

 Holidays and other leave

The university offers generous annual leave entitlement plus concessionary days when the university is closed over the Christmas period. There is also generous maternity, adoption and paternity leave. 

 Leisure and 'work-life balance'

The university offers many ways to achieve a balance between work and life outside work. Options include flexible working, job sharing, family friendly schemes, health and welfare support , training and development, sport and leisure , and special leave including family emergencies and exams.

 Libraries

Each site has libraries containing books and serials on all subjects taught at the university as well as a selection of recreation and background material. There are also reciprocal arrangements with the library at University of Sussex and City College.  Find out more: libraries.

 Pensions

The university offers very competitive contributory pension schemes which provide a comprehensive range of retirement benefits plus provision for dependants. Arrangements exist for transfer in from other pension schemes. Find out more: Local Government Pension Scheme   Teachers Pensions.

 Religious life

The Chaplaincy is available for students and staff of all faiths and none, offering support in whatever way is most needed. The Chaplaincy also runs lectures, social occasions, opportunities for worship, discussion, pilgrimages and weekends away.  Find out more: religious life.

 Relocation scheme

Financial assistance to a maximum of £2000 is provided to new staff who are appointed for a period of at least two years and who are required to move a significant distance in order to live within 30 miles of their workplace. Find out more: Relocation grant scheme .

 Transportation and car parking

In the interest of the environment, staff and students are encouraged to use alternatives to cars whenever possible. The sites are easily reached by frequent bus services and the university offers travel loans and an opportunity to buy buy bikes tax-free.  Although limited, car parking spaces are available at all sites.  Find out more: maps and directions.

 Shops

Shops on each site sell confectionery and stationery during term-time. The shop at Grand Parade stocks artists’ supplies and the Computer Store at Moulsecoomb sells hardware and software. The bookshop at Moulsecoomb stocks all recommended textbooks plus fiction and reference books and provides a rapid ordering and courier service covering other sites on request.  See: shops.

 Sport and recreation

The Sport and Recreation Service runs a variety of indoor and outdoor activities for staff and students. Sport facilities are available on each site with the main provision centred at Falmer, Moulsecoomb and Eastbourne. Facilities include swimming pool, gymnasia, tennis and netball courts, grass playing fields and synthetic turf pitches.  Find out more: sport for staff.
