Analysing Subject Concepts

Level: 5
Credit rating: 10
Module type: Taught
Semester offered: 2
Pre-requisites: None
Aims:

The aims for this module are set into the context of the QAA Framework for Higher Education Qualifications and they relate to the SEEC level descriptors for level 5 study.

This module aims to develop a deeper understanding of issues surrounding subject knowledge development. Students will investigate an area of subject knowledge in order to identify underlying principles and consider ways in which their learning may be enhanced.

Learning outcomes

In relation to the QAA Framework for Higher Education Qualifications; the SEEC level descriptors for level 5 study; and the Training and Development Agency’s Professional Standards for Classroom Teachers (TDA, 2007), by the end of the module students should be able to:

  1. demonstrate secure understanding in a previously weak area of subject knowledge;
  2. identify core concepts and underlying principles in the area concerned;
  3. propose a more effective model of delivery.
Content:

Subject area to be addressed is to be identified through the audit.  Depending on the area, the approach to subject knowledge development will vary but students should be able to identify underpinning concepts and translate these to a more effective learning method.

Learning and teaching strategies:

Contact time will be a mixture of practical and critical workshops and tutorials - both tutor led and tutor supported

Non-contact time will be used by students to explore the subject area and continue developing skills, knowledge and understanding. Peer support plays a very important role
