International study at the University of Brighton

Design and Technology - Design and Make

Level: 5
Credit rating: 10
Module type: Single
Semester offered: 1
Pre-requisites: None
Aims:

The aims for this module are set into the context of the QAA Framework for Higher Education Qualifications and they relate to the SEEC level descriptors for level 5 study.

In this module students will develop their design skills to facilitate the development of an appropriate product. Students will recognise key characteristics of a design process and its relationship to the realisation of the product.

Learning outcomes:

In relation to the QAA Framework for Higher Education Qualifications; the SEEC level descriptors for level 5 study; and the Training and Development Agency’s Professional Standards for Classroom Teachers (TDA, 2007), by the end of the module students should be able to:

  1. use a design process in the development of a product;
  2. realise a suitable outcome demonstrating safe practice;
  3. apply appropriate evaluation techniques.
Content:

Designing using a range of drawing and modelling techniques in the development of a response to a given brief. Safe working practice and manufacturing techniques in realising a product.

Learning and teaching strategies:

Contact time will be a mixture of practical and critical workshops and tutorials - both tutor led and tutor supported

Non-contact time will be used by the students to work on their design and make assignment.

Learning support:

This will depend upon the identified strengths and areas for development. However, the following electronic sources will certainly be used.
