Exercise for Health and Physical Performance

Level: 4
Credit rating: 10
Module type: Taught
Semester offered: 1
Pre-requisites: None
Aims:

The aims for this module are set into the context of the QAA Framework for Higher Education Qualifications and they relate to the SEEC level descriptors for level 4 study.

  • Develop understanding of physical activity and fitness components
  • Introduce the fundamental principles of exercise based interventions to improve health and performance
  • Enable students to experience a variety of different physical activities used to improve health and fitness
  • Introduce students to practical field and laboratory techniques that enable them to collect and interpret data from various exercise modes
Learning outcomes:

In relation to the QAA Framework for Higher Education Qualifications and the SEEC level descriptors for level 4 study, by the end of the module students should be able to:

  1. Describe the components of fitness and their relationship to health and fitness;
  2. Describe and explain common exercise interventions used to improve health and fitness;
  3. Describe how physical activity sessions can be evaluated from a physiological perspective
  4. Evaluate the effectiveness of different physical activities to improve health and fitness
Content:

The content of SE403 will be divided into the following six sections:

Components of fitness, physical activity guidelines, resistance exercise, aerobic exercise, intermittent exercise, exercise and physiological monitoring. These will be performed using a variety of modes e.g. nordic walking, mountain biking, aqua training.

All sections will be related to physical activity and the improvement of health and fitness.

Learning and teaching strategies:

Contact time:

  • Lectures and practicals

Non-contact time:

This is expected to be made up of the following:

  • directed study (completed independently and in small groups using student central)
  • tutorials with staff
  • preparation for written assessment task
