Aims:

The aims for this module are set into the context of the QAA Framework for Higher Education Qualifications and they relate to the SEEC level descriptors for level 2 study.

Specifically the module aims to

  1. recognise and synthesise theoretical debates and issues surrounding the concept of globalisation
  2. debate such issues as they apply to sport
  3. compare aspects of sport and related activities in different social, economic, and political environments. 
Learning outcomes

In relation to the QAA Framework for Higher Education Qualifications and the SEEC level descriptors for level 2 study, by the end of the module students should be able to:

  1. Engage in informed debates about the nature of globalisation and related concepts in relation to sport;
  2. Compare and contrast aspects of contemporary social, political, cultural and economic factors influencing sports practices;
  3. Identify important principles underlying different societies and the ways in which distinctive sets of social relations have given rise to differently structured experiences of sport.
Content:

The purpose of this module is to provide students with a comparative perspective for the analysis of globalisation and sport demonstrating: their dependence upon particular social, political and economic factors; their roles in the promotion of nationalism and/or cross-national and cross-community relations; and the influence of global flows of power, ideology; information and economic practices.
