Aims:

The aims for this module are set into the context of the QAA Framework for Higher Education Qualifications and they relate to the SEEC level descriptors for level 1 study.

  • To introduce students to the complex relationships between sport and society
  • To introduce students to the key sociological concepts
  • To introduce students to key theoretical debates within the sociology of sport
Learning outcomes:

In relation to the QAA Framework for Higher Education Qualifications and the SEEC level descriptors for level 1study, by the end of the module students should be able to: 

Recognise and explain:

  1. the nature of sociology as a discipline of study
  2. the links between sociological thought and sport
  3. the development of the sociology of sport
Content:
  • Introduction to social issues in sport
  • Develop awareness of power relations in sport
  • Develop awareness of social inequalities in sport
  • Develop awareness of how sociology can help explain power and inequality in sport
