Aims:

The aims for this module are set into the context of the QAA Framework for Higher Education Qualifications and they relate to the SEEC level descriptors for level 1 study.

  • Develop appreciation of the distinctive nature of Outdoor and Adventurous activities.
  • Introduce and develop knowledge and conceptual understanding of performance in selected outdoor and adventurous activities.
  • Equip students with the necessary technical skills to perform in selected outdoor and adventurous activities.
  • Introduce the skill of movement observation and analysis to enhance students’ appreciation of their own and others performance.
  • Encourage the use of ICT and other learning support material to promote student learning and aid quality of individual performance
Learning outcomes:

In relation to the QAA Framework for Higher Education Qualifications and the SEEC level descriptors for level 1 study, by the end of the module students should be able to:

  1. Recognise, describe and analyse the distinctive nature of outdoor and adventurous activities.
  2. Have acquired and developed an understanding of performance in selected outdoor and adventurous activities.
  3. Demonstrate a range of performance skills in outdoor and adventurous activities.
  4. Analyse and evaluate selected skills and techniques in a range of outdoor and adventurous activities.
  5. Recognise progression and development of content in a range of outdoor and adventurous activities.
  6. Identify and apply principles of safe working practice both within lecture and non-contact time.

In addition to the learning objectives that are formally assessed students will be able to:

     7.  Demonstrate an awareness of how ICT can support      improvement and refinement in the quality of performance in outdoor and adventurous activities 

Content:

Contact time:

Risk assessment is covered in detail at the start of the module and

relates to the principles and policies of the University of Brighton

and will comply with the BAALPE (2004) National Safety Guidelines, “Safe Practice in Physical Education” and in particular OAA (p 217 – 258)

Particular reference will be made to: Safety Education; The Physical Education Environment; Clothing; Personal Effects and Protection. Safe practice is then applied and reinforced throughout the module and students are instructed to follow all principles and policies in non-contact time.

  • Knowledge of safe practice in selected outdoor and adventurous activities.
  • Selected outdoor and adventurous activities.
  • The nature and purpose of OAA.
  • Observation and analysis of group work challenges.
  • Personal and social education in OAA.
  • Navigation and route planning.
  • Problem solving and physical challenges.
  • Light Weight camping

Non-contact time:

Planning, performing and evaluating for the lightweight overnight camping expedition

  • Staff led lectures.

  • Discussions in pairs and small groups.
  • Question and answer sessions.
  • Problem solving -individually and in small groups.
  • Student practical work -individually and in small groups.
  • Practical demonstrations.
