The aims for this module are set into the context of the QAA Framework for Higher Education Qualifications and they relate to the SEEC level descriptors for level 5 study.

This module aims to further develop knowledge and understanding of the concepts and skills in chemistry for student teachers.

Learning outcomes:

In relation to the QAA Framework for Higher Education Qualifications and the SEEC level descriptors for level 5 study, by the end of the module students should be able to:

  1. use correct scientific and technical terms that are necessary to provide clear explanations of Chemistry;
  2. have a detailed knowledge and understanding of the scientific concepts and principles of Chemistry;
  3. understand progression from KS3 Chemistry to A-level and to explore the most common misconceptions and mistakes in Chemistry made by learners.
Content:
  1. Materials and their properties
  2. Learners’ difficulties with chemistry
  3. Recent research evidence on the teaching and learning of Chemistry
  4. Ideas and evidence in Chemistry
Learning and teaching strategies:

Students will engage in a variety of science activities, including the use of ICT, reflecting different strategies and approaches to the teaching and learning of Chemistry.
