Aims:

The aims for this module are set into the context of the QAA Framework for Higher Education Qualifications and they relate to the SEEC level descriptors for level 1 study.

  • Promote students’ knowledge and understanding of track and field athletic events.
  • Develop students’ level of performance in track and field athletic events.
Learning outcomes:

In relation to the QAA Framework for Higher Education Qualifications and the SEEC level descriptors for level 1 study, by the end of the module students should be able to:

LO 1.  Have knowledge and understanding of recognised technique in track and field athletic events.

LO 2.  Be able to demonstrate appropriate technique across a range of track and field athletic events.

In addition to those outcomes that are assessed, this module will also address;

  • Students’ understanding of the distinctive nature of track and field athletics
  • Students’ knowledge of progression and development of technical content
  • Students’ ability to identify and apply principles of safe working practices both within lecture and non-contact time
  • Students awareness of how ICT can be used to aid, improve and refine the quality of performance in relation to track and field athletic events.
Content:
  • Risk assessment is covered in detail at the start of the module and relates to the principle and policies of the University of Brighton, and BAALPE’s Safe Practice in Physical Education (2004).   Safe practice is then applied and reinforced throughout the course of the module and students are instructed to follow all principles and policies in non-contact time
  • warming up and cooling down
  • techniques and progressions  in running, jumping and throwing events
  • competition rules
  • safe procedure in athletics activities
  • personal performance in athletics events
  • analysis of performance
  • how to use ICT to enhance performance

Tutor sessions and student-led group work.

Independent study relating to lectures.
