Aims:

To enable students to:

  • Understand and apply the theories of human behaviour to the management of individuals and groups in the workplace.
  • Determine the relationships between those theories and the roles and responsibilities a line manager has in the daily management of people.
Learning outcomes:

By the end of the module students will be able to:

  1. Recognise and evaluate the influence and effects of individual, group and organisational behaviour on the effective management of people in service organisations.
  2. Analyse, using relevant theories, the key concepts and processes involved in delivering effective high quality, practical and innovative people solutions to specific business challenges.
  3. Determine and evaluate which aspects of managing people contribute to exceptional performance and how these impact on the overall business success.

  • Individual differences: personality, gender, culture, perception, attitudes, values, learning styles
  • Group and team dynamics
  • Content and process theories of motivation, motivating people at work
  • Organisational structure and culture
  • Communication - verbal, non-verbal and written
  • The role / nature of management - management and leadership styles, decision making, power, politics and conflict
  • The role and responsibilities of the line manager in managing people
  • Managing resources / talent - job design, recruitment, selection
  • Employer branding
  • Employment law - recruitment, selection, grievance, discipline, diversity
  • Managing and measuring performance
  • Rewarding and developing people, engaging employees
  • Work-life balance and managing stress
  • Managing change - mergers and acquisitions
  • HR information systems
  • International / global people strategies
  • Management of Diversity
Learning and teaching strategies:

Full-time delivery mode. 10 teaching weeks plus 4 weeks group & individual tutorials and assessment.

Total Learner Hours: 200

Contact hours: 48 consisting of workshops, mini lectures, group discussions, case studies, exercises and tutorials.
