Aims:

The aims for this module are set into the context of the QAA Framework for Higher Education Qualifications and they relate to the SEEC level descriptors for level 2 study.

With a main emphasis on water sports, this module aims to:

  1. Consolidate and extend students’ practical performance in a selected range of water-based activities;
  2. Develop students’ subject knowledge of the technical aspects of selected water sports;
  3. Provide students with an intensive practical experience at an appropriate local water sports venue with the objective of developing their practical skills in a range of activities (for example: windsurfing, kayaking, canoeing and dinghy sailing), at a level appropriate to their existing capacities.

Increase students’ awareness and knowledge of organisational issues when working with young people in water-based environments.

In relation to the QAA Framework for Higher Education Qualifications and the SEEC level descriptors for level 2 study, by the end of the module students should be able to:

By the end of the module at an immediate level the students will be able to:

  1. Analyse the mechanical and technical principles of a selected water sport in respect to safe and effective movement in the activity;
  1. Develop their competencies and understanding of the physical demands of a selected water sport
  2. To evaluate issues related to activities in such environments, including safety and emergency, access, environmental impacts.
  3. Evaluate the organisational issues when working with young people in water-based environments
Content:
  • Technical movements and dynamic balance required in various water sports;
  • Physical fitness for water sports
  • Practical skills instruction and development
  • Water sports clothing and equipment.   
  • Water sports safety and risk assessment
