Study abroad for student teachers
If you are a student teacher we have a short summer programme and a semester-long study abroad option.
Internship programme
The Internship programme is run in partnership with Illinois State University. Students who are in their final year and have just completed an internship in the United States are offered a placement in a primary school in and around Eastbourne.
Students live with a host family and are placed in the local school for 8 to 10 weeks. The program is offered in both the autumn (fall) and spring semesters, and students apply through Illinois State University.
As an intern you are supervised and mentored by the school and are regularly visited by a University of Brighton academic. You will have an induction week, where you get advice on the placement and learn more about teaching practice in English schools. During this week, you will attend seminars at the university and visit the placement school.
Living and working in Eastbourne
Eastbourne is a friendly seaside town, in easy travelling distance of Brighton. The town has a great choice of shops, sporting facilities, pubs, clubs, restaurants, and arts and entertainment venues. Find out more about living in Eastbourne.
All students have the opportunity to sign up for optional field trips to East Sussex, London, Oxford and Stratford-Upon-Avon, Bath and Stonehenge, Rye and Bodiam Castle and Paris (France). These run during the fall and spring semesters. Find out more about field trips.
Summer school for student teachers
The study abroad office summer school is an intensive three-week program that runs in July. It is primarily aimed at student teachers from the United States.
