Wireless network services

If you have a laptop computer, the wireless network service gives you access to the university's network in relaxed environments, such as cafeterias and seating areas, inside, as well as outside, university buildings.

We recommend that you read the information below before attempting to use the wireless network.

  • eduroam wireless

    eduroam (education roaming) is the secure, world-wide roaming access service developed for the international research and education community.

    eduroam allows students, researchers and staff from participating institutions to gain internet access at other participating organisations that they visit.

    The same username and password can be used at all institutions, which means that if you've used eduroam at one site, you are ready to use it at any other participating institution you visit. There should be no need to change settings on laptops or mobile devices.

    Anyone using eduroam at the University of Brighton must abide by  the 'Conditions of Use of University of Brighton Computing Facilities ' and the JANET eduroam policy

    This section describes some of the essential steps you should take to protect your computer and your data, if you are planning to connect to a network.
  • Using your own computer from student residences

    If you are living in one of the university residences, you may have internet access from your room. To find out where this service is available, contact the Residences and Catering department.

    To connect to our network, follow the steps below:

    1. Obtain a university username and password for logging into our network.
      If you haven't got your username and password yet, visit the activate web page to activate your account instantly.

    2. Check that your computer has got antivirus software installed.
      If you don't have any, speak to the staff in your residence. They can give you a copy of a market-leading product free of charge. They can also give you a free network cable, ready to plug your computer into the socket in your room.

    3. Configure your operating system and your web browser  to work with our network (e.g. Windows with Internet Explorer  or Mac OSX with Safari).
      It only takes a couple of minutes and there are step-by-step guides available on www.brighton.ac.uk/is/docs (with the search term connect), or the free CD-ROM available from the Connection Clinics. It's not difficult, but you will need to follow the brief instructions carefully.

    4. If you have any problems, or you're not sure whether your antivirus software is working properly, visit one of our Computer First Aid Clinics , where one of our techies will do their best to help you.
