Student Guide to Submitting work to Turnitin
turnitin.png

What is Turnitin

Turnitin is an online assignment submission tool within studentcentral. It allows you to submit your work electronically for assessment. It can be used to handle the collection, marking and return of feedback on your work.

It is also used to check assignment submissions for 'originality'. It does this by comparing the text of a submitted assignment against text from a wide range of electronic material including journals, websites, and other students' work, including work from many UK universities.

 e-submission checklist

  • Read the assessment details in your module on studentcentral.
  • Follow any instructions given to you by your tutor.
  • Leave plenty of time to submit your assignment online before the deadline. And allow time for any unexpected technical issues.
  • Make sure you have access to an Internet connected computer and studentcentral at the time you want to submit your work.
  • Where your tutor has allowed you to resubmit your assignment up until the Due Date, make a practice submission using a draft, to test the process.
  • File size - the maximum file size is 20MB.
  • Submit using a supported type of file. Be aware that your tutor may specify a particular format.
  • Check you have submitted the correct version of your assignment and the file is not corrupted.
  • Remember that you can submit one file only, for example appendices cannot be separate files.

technical checklist

Computer system requirements - http://turnitin.com/static/support/system.php

Supported browsers - Internet Explorer, Firefox, Chrome, Safari.

Supported file types - Microsoft Word (DOC and DOCX), Corel WordPerfect®, HTML , Adobe PostScript, Plain text (TXT), Rich Text Format (RTF), Portable Document Format (PDF), OpenOffice (ODT)

The recommendation is to always save files in Word .doc/.docx format - most word processing software applications provide this option.

converting files to PDF

Where possible, you should use MS Word (or Open Office Writer) to produce your written assignments. When using other Microsoft applications (e.g. PowerPoint) you can go to Save as... > PDF to convert the file.

recommendations for preparing files

The following recommendations are designed to ensure your file uploads without any problems. You should:

  • Produce or assemble your written assignment in MS Word (or Open Office Writer), where possible.
  • Avoid using WordArt in MS Office applications.
  • Avoid using text boxes where possible.
  • Use standard common font types. (e.g. Arial, Verdana, Helvetica, Times New Roman).
  • Copy and paste in text to your file as ‘plain text’ to remove any hidden code, especially where this is taken from web pages.
  • Insert graphics, photos or charts as images that are in either png, jpeg or gif format.
