There are a number of ways we can give you additional support with using our libraries.
Books for longer - Extended status We offer books for longer periods to some students. This is useful if it is difficult for you to get to the library or if you need more time with books to use them effectively. Libraries only offer this service to students who have been recommended by Student Services. Students then have their library record changed to what is known as Extended status and can have:
Longer loan periods on long loan items (but not short or desk loan material) – usually to the end of term
If books on loan to Extended status students are reserved by other users they will be recalled and the book must then be returned within three weeks. Fines will be charged if the book is not returned within this time.
Library staff will know that you have Extended status on your card, but they will not know why this has been granted and they will not ask. If you have questions about extended status, contact Student Services Disability and Dyslexia team
(Tel: 01273 643799 or email:
).
Photocopying Library staff will be happy to assist with limited amounts of photocopying. If you require extensive support with this, please contact the university’s Disability and Dyslexia team at
who may be able to arrange a support worker to help. If you will be reclaiming the cost of your photocopying, please buy your photocopy cards from the library desk and ask for a receipt.
BSL trained staff
Some Information Services staff members have taken courses in British Sign Language. Most of these staff members have a CACDP level one certificate. Though they are not advanced signers they will help if they can. Contact one of the libraries if you want to know where to find staff who can sign.
Access to stock
Items in the library are marked with small spine labels and shelved both low to the floor and very high. Staff will fetch items of stock from the shelves if this is difficult for you.
