Anti-virus software Print

Information Services recommends that you use regularly updated anti-virus software. We currently have a license agreement to use software from Sophos. The latest (version 9) software is currently being rolled out across the university, and is being made available for installing on your home computers. If you want to install / update your home installation, the following documents may be useful:

Installing Sophos Anti Virus on your Windows computer

Installing Sophos Anti Virus on your Mac computer

Working with the Sophos firewall on your Windows PC

All university open access computer pool rooms have anti-virus software installed. Image

If you are a student, or a member of staff, the software is also available to you to use on your computer at the university and on one computer at home. Anti-virus CDs are available from the Computer Store in the Watts building (Moulsecoomb).

You can also download the software from our server - visit http://security.brighton.ac.uk/ and log in using your University username and password.  (Do not type university\ before your username). This works for Staff and Students. See below for documents with information on how to install Sophos.

Keeping up-to-date
Once the Sophos client has been installed on your Mac or Windows PC, it will collect the latest updates from our Anti-Virus server automatically. You don't have to do anything! Updates are available from inside and outside the University. So, for laptop or home users, our updates will be available from anywhere you have an internet connection, not just within the University.

Are you using McAfee anti-virus software? You should note that our license with McAfee expired August 2006. You must either remove the software, or buy your own license.  For help removing McAfee and installing Sophos on your Mac or PC at home, see the following documents:
