If the University of Brighton does not have the item that you need, you may be able to request an inter-library loan. This is an item that we obtain for you from another library. Our main supplier of inter-library loans is the British Library.
Please note that this service is not usually
available for first year undergraduates.
Ask at your library Help Desk to find out if you are eligible for
inter-library loans.
Items that can be requested include books, journal articles, theses and conference proceedings. We cannot obtain videos, CDs or DVDs by inter-library loan.
*UK PhD theses are available via the EThOS website at http://ethos.bl.uk/
There is a form for requesting a book or thesis and a form for requesting a journal article or conference paper:

Journal articles can be supplied as paper copies which you can keep, or by Secure Electronic Delivery to your university email address.
Length of loan
Books and theses are lent for a period of 5 weeks. Inter-library loans that have been sent as photocopies are yours to keep.
Renewing
If you wish to extend the loan period beyond the due date, you can ask at the library Help Desk and we will check with the lending library to see if this is possible. There is normally a charge for renewing items.
Fines
Please be aware that most libraries will charge fines for overdue items; the British Library charge up to a maximum of £88.32 for very overdue loans.
Secure Electronic Delivery SED
The British Library offers a secure electronic delivery service
for delivering inter-library journal articles and conference
papers electronically rather than as printed copies to be collected from your home library. If you order
documents via the SED service you will be notified by email when the
document is available for you to download.
Please note that the article cannot be saved electronically. It must be accessed within 30 days. You may download and view on one computer only for up to 14 days from the download date and print once from that machine.
To use SED, you must:
- have a current University of Brighton email address
- have Adobe Reader version 4 or above if using your own computer and have installed the FileOpen plug-in which can be accessed from the British Library website
- be available to access, within 30 days, the email we send you when the document becomes available
- confirm that you have successfully downloaded the test document provided by the British Library here: test document download page N.B. You must do this on the same computer that you intend downloading and printing your SED articles on.
For more details of the service, contact your library Help Desk.
