Find and access information Print

The Online Library
This is the university's collection of electronic resources, and can be accessed through the tab on studentcentral or at http://library.brighton.ac.uk/  There are links to the library catalogue, the Information Services website, library news and all the online resources - which  include the databases in A-Z order (or you can search by subject), online reference resources and statistics, film, image and sound sources, and CrossSearch where you can search many resources all at once. You can also search direct for a specific journal title in the Electronic Journals link, to see if the university subscribes.

  • Guide to using the Online Library (is067).
  • Click here for more information on using Online Resources.
  • Information Services run workshops for using the Online Library. Click here for a list of workshops and to make a booking. All workshops are also advertised on the Student Calendar on studentcentral.

Books and reading lists

Sconul Access is a scheme which allows reciprocal borrowing from other university libraries. Click here to find out more.

If we don't have the book or journal article you need (whether online or in print at any of the university site libraries) you can request an Inter-Library loan here or at your site library Help Desk.

Journals
Journals are academic "magazines" or periodicals, published regularly and much more often than books. They contain contributions by academic experts in their field, so they are quality information and are extremely useful for research. Using them as well as books and websites will mean achieving better marks in your assignments.

There are library guides to some of the databases in the Resources A-Z section of the Online Library. Follow the link next to the database title. Or you can use the Help / Search Tips / Tools within each database.

If the article isn't online, but is available in print at another site library, you can request a photocopy. See How to borrow from another site library (isdoc 431) for information on how to do this.

Journal articles are contained in databases. For more information about databases:

Websites

Subject gateways are collections of websites chosen by academics who are experts in their field.

  • BUBL and INTUTE have now closed due to lack of funding, but still point to good quality web sources.
  • PINAKES is a collection of subject gateways (known as a subject launchpad) provided by Heriot-Watt University, Edinburgh
