Changes to password security Print

From January 16 2013, the university will be implementing a more secure password policy. The security improvements mean that you can now use permitted symbols and spaces and you will be able to use longer passwords.

These changes will not affect your existing passwords and you will not have to change your password until you wish to. However, when you do change your password you must choose one that  ...

  • consists of between 8 and 16 characters (combinations of letters, numbers, spaces and permitted symbols)
  • does not start or end with a space
  • does not contain your username
  • contains at least one character from each of the following groups:
  • UPPER CASE letters
  • lower case letters
  • numbers, spaces and these permitted symbols  !$%&’()*+, /; = > < ? [ \ ] ^`_{}

As before you can change your password using the myinfo facility at https://myinfo.brighton.ac.uk - help and guidance is provided to ensure you choose a valid password.

16 characters not enough?

From the summer of 2013 we plan to increase the maximum permitted length to 127 characters. Until then, the maximum will be 16.

See our web pages for more information on changing and using your university password .
