Word Microsoft Word is a part of Microsoft's Office suite. We offer the following workshops for Word 2007 and 2010 for Windows, 2008 and 2011 for Mac.

Working with long documents: preparing documents, reports and theses in Word

This workshop will help you to use Word more efficiently. Whilst especially useful in the preparation of long documents such as theses or course handbooks, this session is invaluable for anyone working with Word. If you currently format your documents by selecting individual sections of text and then using the formatting icons on your home tab then this workshop may be a revelation!

Would benefit: All staff, researchers and students who need to prepare long documents, from theses to course handbooks.

Topics covered:

  • Using styles to save time formatting and manage headings
  • Building tables of contents automatically
  • Managing headers, footers and page numbering
  • Using breaks to manage sections of a document independently.
  • Structuring your document using document outline and document maps.

Working with long documents: Master Documents

This workshop explains how to use Word to pull several documents together by building a master document. This is sometimes needed to prepare dissertations, long documents and theses for publications.

Topics covered:

  • Planning your document.
  • Creating and editing a master document.
  • Building the table of contents.
  • Printing
  • Sending the document to someone else.

Would benefit: All staff and researchers who need to build a master document.

Working with tables in Word

If you've ever found yourself tangled up trying to control tables in Word or you're simply unaware of how Word tables can be used to improve the layout of your information, then this workshop is for you.

Topics covered:

  • Selecting in tables
  • Changing the layout of a table
  • Formatting a table including borders, shading, cell alignment and gridlines.

Would benefit: All staff and researchers who want to learn more about presenting information with Word.

Mail-merging with Word

Mail Merge saves you lots of time whenever you need to create multiple copies of a document but need to personalise each individual document in some way. For instance:

  • Sending the same letter to everyone in a database, but changing the name and address on each letter
  • Creating conference sticky labels from a list of attendees in Excel
  • Printing envelope labels from an Excel list or a database
  • Sending the same email to everyone in a contacts list but personalising the email to say "Dear Dr Jones" instead of having one impersonal email send to a distribution list.

Topics covered:

  • Using the Mail Merge Wizard to perform a Mail Merge
  • Creating and editing recipient lists
  • Using Mail merge to write a letter, print labels and send personalised emails.
  • Using rules in Mail Merge to determine the content of a document according to the recpient.

Would benefit: Admin staff and any other staff who send mass mailings or produce name labels.

Prerequisites: Working knowledge of Excel and Word.
