FAQs

KTPs at Brighton (PDF)

What is a Knowledge Transfer Partnership (KTP)?

KTP is a world-leading programme that helps businesses succeed by connecting them to the UK's rich academic resources. It's a partnership between the business seeking expertise, a university or college and a recently qualified graduate – known as an Associate. Each partnership lasts from twelve months to three years.

The graduate carries out a strategic project in your business, with expert university academic guidance. Up to 67% of the project costs are government-funded.

If you apply to KTP and you're successful, an Associate (supervised by the company and the university) will work in your company and help bring your plans to life.

A classic Knowledge Transfer Partnership can involve refining or designing products, opening new markets, improving business, marketing or manufacturing systems and cutting costs and waste.

The focus of KTP funding is currently on delivering Management Knowledge Transfer Partnership (mKTP), which run alongside classic Knowledge Transfer Partnerships (KTP). Managed in exactly the same way and with the same grant rate, mKTPs are designed specifically to inject new management expertise to help expand business capability, increase productivity and flexibility and enable lasting change and growth.

How can a KTP benefit my business?

Knowledge Transfer Partnerships enable companies to access the resources and expertise they need to innovate and grow.

The latest statistics from Innovate UK show that, on average, the KTP business benefits are:

  • £113k one-off increase in net profit during the programme
  • projected increase of over £1 million in annual profits before tax
  • the creation of two new jobs
  • increase in skills of existing staff.

Company contributions vary from 33 to 50% of the total project cost and companies can apply for R&D tax relief.
