Xavier Boissieux won an Institute of Refrigeration Award for work carried out during his time as a TCS associate.
Xavier's project involved setting up a research and development department and introducing a new range of products for Fareham based Coolers & Condensers Ltd. The company manufactures heat exchangers for industrial refrigeration and air conditioning units.
During the project Xavier made use of test facilities in the university's School of Engineering to obtain and check data which he incorporated into a design programme.
Xavier explains, 'The design programme has enabled us to make products which offer improved performance and meet European Certification standards.'
Xavier's work has given Coolers and Condensers Limited an enhanced profile with customers and an edge over competitors. 'Our European Certification verifies the heat exchanger performance quoted in catalogues and boosts customer confidence in our ranges.'
Shoreham based Pyroban Group Ltd. are world leaders in the field of flameproof technologies. They produce equipment such as flameproof fork-lift trucks for use in oil refineries, mines and other hazardous industrial environments.
Pyroban want to maintain their position in an increasingly competitive market. In 1999 Pyroban began two TCS schemes with CENTRIM (the Centre for Innovation Management) and the School of Engineering at the University of Brighton.
Associate Matt Froud's project enabled Pyroban to explore in depth what options there are for cost reduction in the company's manufacturing processes. Matt's work is already having an impact, his work led him to recommend investment in new software which removes the need for plasma cutting templates by linking plasma cutters and CAD draughting terminals. This innovation has delivered cost and time saving benefits.
Christian Keefe's TCS programme with Pyroban also centres on maintaining the company's competitive edge. Christian's work focuses on introducing more rapid product development through the implementation of scientific rather than intuitive analysis of markets and competitors.
Pyroban's Managing Director Brian Tyrer explains, 'We were lucky in that one of our associates had already done a year's placement with us as an undergraduate. In both TCS programmes it was crucial to us to find the right calibre candidates who would stay the course.'
