Arts and Media principal lecturer, Dr Sarah Atkinson and media technician, Marley Cole, are staging a soundscape performance to coincide with London's Olympic year, which fuses sport, circus and immersive sound.

1908: Body and Soul will use the sports history expertise of Professor Alan Tomlinson (School of Sport and Service Management) and experimental media production, in a collaboration with theatre production company Lightning Ensemble to recall London’s first Olympic Games held in 1908.

Using practice-based research techniques, they will explore the collusion of old and new media through the digital sonification of stories and characters from the 1908 games. The performance will take place in June 2012 at the Jacksons Lane multi-arts venue in Highgate, North London.

Lighting Ensemble is offering ten students a unique opportunity to participate in a research project through grant-funded work placements. They are looking for original thinkers to lead their own research and work to create a live theatrical spectacle working with professional, contemporary theatre and circus artists.

Interested undergraduate and postgraduate students who possess a passion for enquiry, from any discipline or subject area, be it science, history, fashion etc. should contact Marie McCarthy at: marie.mac@virgin.net for more information.

1908: Body and Soul draws on Sarah Atkinson and Marley Cole’s earlier Auditoryum sonic artwork, and is one of four flagship projects commissioned by the Creative Campus Initiative.
