Scanning for Gold
Published 10 July 2012
Scanning for Gold is a collaboration between Brighton and Sussex Medical School and the University of Brighton's School of Sport and Service Management.
Contributors include Professor Darrell Evans and Dr Malcolm Johnston (BSMS) and Dr Gary Brickley (School of Sport and Service Management). Photography is by Brighton-based photographer James Lewis, and there are artworks inspired by the scans created by the BSMS Art Society.
Scanning for Gold began as a project of the Creative Campus Initiative, and holds an Inspired by 2012 award for contribution to the Cultural Olympiad.
To coincide with the Olympic and Paralympic Games, the Scanning for Gold 2012 exhibition is currently on display at the Jubilee Library, Brighton until 6 August and then makes a return for the Paralympics from 23 August to 9 September.
The exhibition uses medical imaging, photography and art to explore how Olympic and Paralympic athletes change their bodies to perform at the highest level and how science prepares them for this challenge.
