The Olympic Stadium 2012

London 2012

Torchbearer: Ben Stevens

Published 6 June 2012

On 17 July 2012, Ben Stevens, a second year applied criminology student studying at the university, carried the Olympic torch through his home town of Crowborough, East Sussex.

Ben is a fully qualified club coach at Beacon Swimming Club and has built up his own lifesaving club (The Freedom Rescuers) that teaches children how to save lives both in the water and on land. His club now has around 50 members and is still growing. Two members qualified for the National Championships at the end of 2011 in Sheffield.

He also teaches children with disabilities how to swim, and one of his swimmers was runner-up in the ASA National Disability Swimmer of the year award in 2011.

Ben said: "I am carrying the Olympic torch this summer through Crowborough. A swimmer nominated me for building my own lifesaving club and my other achievements. From 65,000 people who applied through the Coca Cola Future Flames initiative, only 1,500 people got this."

Coca Cola said: "We have been searching across the UK for extraordinary people – those that have a burning passion and use it to spread happiness and inspire others. These are our Coca Cola future flames."
