Torchbearer: Nick Webborn
Published 24 July 2012
Nick Webborn, principal research fellow at the School of Sport and Service Management, carried the torch through Lewes on 17 July 2012. Nick was nominated for his commitment to his work as a doctor, for his kindness and his determination.
Sport has always been a major part of Nick’s life but at the age of twenty-four he was paralysed from a spinal injury playing rugby. Since then he has devoted most of his professional life to helping others achieve their goals in sport.
Not only has he helped many athletes at all levels to keep going with their chosen sport but has himself played wheelchair tennis internationally and continues to play a role in encouraging those with injury or disability to participate in sport whatever their level.
In addition to his numerous professional roles and achievements, he has attended seven Paralympic games and has been appointed as chief medical officer for the British Paralympic team for the London games. Nick’s nomination acknowledges the enormous courage and determination he has shown – achieving far more than could ever have been expected following his injury – and his inspiration to others.
